Eye Supplements
Old Research indicated that taking eye vitamins could slow the progression of Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD).

However, new research is showing that there is very little proven benefit and the vitamins could actually be doing harm.

Currently, we are not recommending taking any supplements except highly-purified fish oil and lutein.

A new study by the "Wills Eye Institute" is showing that highly purified fish oil with elevated levels of DHA can reverse macular degeneration.
(See below for fish oil recommendations.)

Cataracts:

Newly published research indicates that lutein and zeaxanthin antioxidants may reduce the risk of age-related cataracts.
Studies on human cells indicate that in fact high levels of lutein and zeaxanthin do help to protect the human lens from the harmful effects of UV light (a major contributor of cataracts).  However, since there is no direct blood supply to the human lens, we are not sure if we can get the antioxidants to the lens simply by ingesting them.  More research needs to be done on this subject, in the meantime, a good pair of UV-blocking sunglasses should do the trick.

Dry Eye:
Essential Fatty Acids (EFA's) have been proven to reduce inflammation (a major cause of dry eye) while also having many other health benefits.  EFA's can not be produced by our bodies, this means that we need to ingest them in our diet.

It is reported that roughly 83% of Americans are deficient in EFA's.  The best source of EFA's is "highly purified fish oil containing (EPA & DHA).  Flax seed oil contains (ALA), which is not as beneficial.

The best Omega 3 source that we have found is "Omega Benefits" by "Physician Recommended Nutriceuticals"

Omega3_(Medium)
Not all fish oil is created equal!

In fact, many fish oil brands are being sued for having toxic levels of PCB's in them.  (PCB is a cancer-causing agent that was banned in 1979, but it is showing up in many fish oil products due to pollution of our oceans.)

Fish oil is made by "pressing" the fish causing the oil to come out along with many contaminates.  Then, ethyl alcohol is added to raise the boiling point of the oil, allowing the manufacturer to "boil off" the impurities.

Most manufactures stop here and encapsulate the oil with the ethyl alcohol still present.

PRN "Dry Eye" Omega Benefits is one Lifeguard_image_(Medium)of the few fish oils that has had the ethyl alcohol removed and the oil has been returned to its natural triglyceride (TG) form.

"Omega Benefits" by PRN is manufactured in a "pharmaceutical grade lab," where the manufacturing process is regulated and monitored by the NSF http://nsf.org for potency and purity.
