Ocular Nutrition

Research Indicates that taking Nutritional Supplements can reduce the risk of Macular Degeneration, in addition to improving our general Health and Wellness

Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD)

The AREDS
study showed that those taking the formulation experienced a 25% reduced rate of progression of advanced Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD).  However, those with mild AMD did not improve on the formulation.

The specific formulation:

~500 milligrams of vitamin C
~400 international units of vitamin E
~15 milligrams of beta-carotene (25 IU of vitamin A)
~80 milligrams of zinc (as zinc oxide)
~2 milligrams of copper (as cupric oxide)  The copper was added to prevent copper deficiency anemia, which is associated with high levels of zinc intake.

The AREDS did not study bilberry, lutein, zeaxanthin antioxidants, but other studies are investigating these and other supplements.  For more information, contact the National Eye Institute at www.nei.nih.gov/amd

Cataracts
Newly published research indicates that lutein and zeaxanthin may reduce the risk of developing age-related cataracts.  Studies on human lens cells indicate that in fact lutein and zeaxanthin do help to protect the human lens from ultraviolet light, which is a contributing cause of cataracts.  However, since there is no direct blood supply to the lens inside the eye, we're not sure if we can get the antioxidants to the human lens simply by ingesting them.
More research is needed and hopefully we will have the answers soon.  This study appears in the Journal of Nutrition www.nutrition.org   For more information about lutein, visit www.luteininfo.com

Dry Eye
Essential fatty acids such as Omega-3s are helpful in dry eye treatment.  Essential fatty acids can not be produced by our bodies, so we need to ingest them.  Good sources of Omega-3s are flax seed oil and some fish oils.  It is reported that approximately 83% of Americans are deficient in Omega-3s. (See bottom of page for supplement recommendations.)

Today, more than ever, consumers and health care practitioners are looking for a way to identify reliable high-quality dietary supplements. Now, there is a way!

NSF International, an independent, not-for-profit organization, helps protect you by certifying products and writing standards for food, water, air and consumer goods www.nsf.org Founded in 1944, NSF is committed to protecting public health and safety worldwide. NSF is a World Health Organization Collaborating Centre for Food and Water Safety and Indoor Environment. Additional services include safety audits for the food and water industries, management systems registrations delivered through NSF International Strategic Registrations, Ltd., organic certification provided by Quality Assurance International and education through the NSF Center for Public Health Education.

In addition to the NSF, there are other independent companies that will verify a nutritional supplement as being "true to the label."   Since the FDA does not regulate vitamins and supplements, it is important to look for products that have been certified by independent labs.
