Regarding Safety

Well, whether you are a "major leaguer," or a "little leaguer," don't overlook the importance of safety eyewear when playing your favorite sport, says the American Optometric Association (www.aoa.org ). Each year, hundreds of men, women and children are injured when playing baseball or softball. It's no wonder when we consider that some pitches have been clocked at 90 miles per hour! To help prevent sports eye injuries, athletes should use protective athletic eyewear whether or not prescription eyewear is needed. One choice is a sports frame with such features as a padded or rubber bridge, deep-grooved eye wires (so lenses won't fall out if the frame is hit hard), a face formed shape for a wider field of view and a headband attachment to keep it in place. Or, a one-piece plastic sports frame with prescription or non-prescription polycarbonate lenses is another choice. Baseball or softball players who are hit in or near the eye, or suffer a blow to the head, should seek immediate care at a hospital emergency room or from an eye care professional.

Many of us wish we could improve our batting average, cut a few strokes off our golf score, etc. Vision is just as important to our sports performance as strength and training. Vision is more than just the ability to see 20/20. Vision consists of eye tracking, the ability to change focus from distance object to near objects quickly, eye alignment (are the eyes both looking at the same target at the same time), which affects depth perception. Comprehensive eye examination by a doctor of optometry can identify visual problems and provide a solution. Additionally, we can utilize sports tints on glasses and or contact lenses to improve contrast sensitivity. Your eye care professional can prescribe these lenses to enhance performance.
